The preservation of traditional Bengali skills was an important factor in the original construction plans for Sreepur Village (Shishu Polli Plus). For this reason a small unit was established to make hand made paper and the children have for many years decorated the paper with wheat straw to develop their handicraft skills.
In recent years we have set up an “outreach vocational training programme” for women from the local community. The women are given basic health and hygiene training and taught to produce wheat straw decorated cards using the paper made in the village. Most of the women have a family income of less than £5 a week and the only opportunity to increase this is to take work in local garment factories . This would involve a cycle of 8 hour shifts taking them away from their children . Once trained at Sreepur the women are able to produce the cards at home and sell the finished product back to us, enabling them to remain within the family and receive a small income.
With the help of “Paperdove”, a Newcastle based design team with worldwide experience of handmade cards, we have been able to produce high quality cards.
